The following is expected to appear in the Southern Argus (but without the privacy considerations)
Members of Alexandrina Contract Bridge Club
celebrated the club’s third birthday with lunch followed by the annual prize
giving at the Hotel Victoria on Wednesday 11 June.
In welcoming members, the Club President, Beryl
W, reminded them that the Club had first met to play Duplicate Contract
Bridge on Wednesday 25 May 2011 in the CWA rooms in Sumter Street but soon
moved to the current and larger venue of The Lutheran Church Hall.
The club continues to grow, drawing players from
surrounding areas from Bridgewater to Murray Bridge to its relaxed and friendly
but still competitive atmosphere. Beryl hoped that a proposed Wednesday evening
session would provide a venue for local Bridge players who were unable to attend
a day time session. She then invited the Club’s Play Director and Scorer to
announce the various prize winners.
Play Director and Scorer, Norman B, noted that
while the Club remained unaffiliated with the Australian Bridge Federation,
about a quarter of Club members were registered ABF members who also played
with affiliated clubs.
He reported that in the 50 playing days between 29
May 2013 and 28 May 2014 there had been 39 players forming 70 different
partnerships. There were actually 14 regular partnerships all of which had won
at least one weekly prize. Norman thanked those players who had regular
partners at other clubs but were happy to play in ad hoc partnerships such as
Rae Judd from Nairne who had played 19 times with 12 different partners to fill
in for absent members.
For the Club Championship a partnership needed to
have played at least 10 times to qualify and all weekly results were included
in calculating an average weekly percentage.
Civic prizes went to Isabel G and Marie P for looking after afternoon tea.
The Partnership Attendance Prize was won by Ruth
D and Malcolm T of Strathalbyn who played together 38 times and at
least one of the partnership was present for every playing session.
The
Encouragement Prize winners for 2014 were Judy R of Strathalbyn and
Beryl W of Nairne. The Best Weekly Winning Percentage (Regular
Partnership) went to Jane M and Bill S of Strathalbyn and Best
Weekly Winning Percentage (Ad Hoc Partnership) went to Marj E of
Strathalbyn and John M of Mount Barker. Second Place in the Club Championship
went to Ron and Lesley B of Mount Barker.
Club Champions and Winners of the Margret W Cup
were Beryl L and Fran G of Murray Bridge. They join previous winners
Ron and Lesley B in 2012 and Margret W and Norman B of Strathalbyn
in 2013. In accepting the Cup, Fran thanked everyone, expressed her surprise at
the win saying it was the first trophy she had ever won and thanked her partner
for the all bidding tutorials they had on the drives back to Murray Bridge. Beryl
agreed with Fran’s sentiments and both expressed their pleasure in playing at
the Club.
Following the presentation, the Club played their
regular weekly competition in the Hotel Victoria Conference Room and it will
count in the 2015 Championship.
